Entropy and Information

I'd like to start by apologizing. I've been re-reading James Gleick's book The Information and I'm just trying to put down some of my thoughts in writing.

I've recently been thinking about the relationship between entropy and information. It's been said that randomness is just a measure of our ignorance. At one scale, (the system particles) a system that has reached maximum entropy has also reached maximum information. However, at another scale, (the system as a whole) there is almost no information in the system at all. A small sample of a fully randomized system is highly likely to be representative of the system as a whole, so this level of predictability means that there is very little information there. On the other hand, each individual particle has a memory of all of it's impacts and collisions going back to when the system had not reached a state of full entropy. Information is never lost, so with each particle collision, that particle gains more information and a memory of the collision.

Retrievable vs. Unretrievable information

Take a book, say The Information by James Gleick. It has a high informaion content at the start. You can increase the information content of the book by writing notes in the margin. Doing this both increases the information content of the book and it's entropy. Add too many notes, circle some phrases use a highlighter, you are continuing to add information to the system, but you've also made the book harder to read (why you can't resel your books in college if you take notes in it). If you add too much information, too many notes, it can become almost impossible to read either the original content, or the additional content that was added. If you dog ear a page here and there it makes it easier to find useful pages in the book. Dog ear every 10th page and you no longer have useful information.

“What we do now echoes in eternity.”

“What we do now echoes in eternity.” I love that quote by Marcus Aurelius. It was also pretty bad ass to hear it in the movie Gladiatory. Marcus was not too far off. Everything you have ever done has added information to the Universe. In theory, that information is retrievable. Nothing you have ever done or will ever do disappears from the great information store of the Universe. If you burn a book, you have just added information to that book. You've also added information about yourself and motivations to the Universe. You can't escape it. We are entering a world where we're learning how to retrieve more and more of the information that was once unretrievable. Like most people I like my privacy, but I think our ideas of privacy are going to have to change in a world where almost everyone will have access to almost any information they want.

In Conclusion????

I really don't know why I wrote this down... my own purposes i guess. I highly doubt anyone is going to read it. Hopefully if you read this you won't get mad at me for wasting your time. If you have any comments on this or want to tell me where I'm wrong, please do.

Posted to: embed.com/ChromeGolfSolitaire.php - First, don't start the timer until the first card is opened. Second, how about showing how many cards are left in the hand. All this is on Golf. Love the game. Thanks

Posted to: gapssolitaire.com/index.php - I play Gaps Solitaire often. Is there a way to pause the game to stop the clock and then resume to resume the clock? And if not, could you add that feature?

    Reply from Rick: Hi Rachel,

Unfortunately there's no pause. When I wrote it, I put the timer in as a kind of after thought. I usually play without paying much attention to it. I know a lot of people are really into beating their best time so I probably should have a pause button.

    Thanks for the suggestion,
    Rick

Posted to: yukonsolitaire.com/NoAuto.php - I prefer to play with the Auto Complete off. But when all the cards are turned up, it would be nice to have the option to finish with Auto Complete on. Maybe a button labelled Finish with Auto Complete.

Posted to: isolitairegames.com/index.php - A new game should start with the first move. With the present set-up, it starts as soon as you click play again. If you step away for a minute, the timer starts even if you have not made a move. For us ocd types, trying to top a record time is part of the fun.

Posted to: embed.com/ChromeColoradoCalculation.php - Hi Rick I love your games . I would like to suggest to start the clock when you click the first card instead of automatically. Some way to adjust the volume to see what other people who are playing what the best time is. to see stats! Some of these I have suggested before but have never seen them implemented. Id like to see a solitaire game with dog breeds English Springer spaniel, Golden lab, Collie and Shepherd would be my choices. Some games need to have double click added.

Posted to: ireversi.com/ChromeReversi.php - I just played in the square 4 spaces down and seven spaces over. there were 3 white pieces in a line diagonally down and to the left, where there was another one of my pieces. only a single row, horizontally to the left, was converted to my pieces. it probably wont make me lose this time, nor will it make me stop playing your reversi game. I still like it, and I hope me reporting more than one problem wont make you think otherwise :)
